A Trip to the Little Red Island aka PEI

My family and I decided to embark on a much needed mini vacation last weekend. Close friends of ours live in Prince Edward Island and with the projection of sunny skies we thought it would be the perfect weekend to visit. The weather was sunny and warm and the beach was stunning.  I don't think we could have picked a more perfect weekend if we tried!

Here are some pictures from our PEI adventure. It truly is a magical place set among red fields, rolling hills, wild flowers and some of the best red sandy beaches encompassed by the beautiful Atlantic ocean.

Going across confederation bridge to the Island.

PEI potato fields

Love these red dirt roads lined with wild flowers.

My handsome husband/chauffeur! (ha)

Our home away from home (wink)

This is the walkway to the Beach (Lakeside). The kids had a ball building sandcastles and playing in the waves.  At one point we looked out into the distance and saw two porpoises (aka dolphins) swimming. Super cool!

One evening we drove out to Brackley beach to indulge in some gourmet seafood take-out. The take- out is called Richards and people line for 30-40 minutes (at times) to indulge in the Atlantic Ocean's finest catch of the day. My husband got the Lobster roll and I got the Fish.  Both were very good and served with a side of fancy coleslaw, gourmet dill tarter sauce and fresh cut fries. YUM!

Another fantastic place to eat is the "Water's Edge" in Charlottetown. It has a newly designed patio by the harbor front with fantastic food, staff and management.

Our days were spent on the red sandy banks of Lakeside beach and our nights roasting marshmallows with the picturesque view of the water in the background.
One word "breathtaking"!
I don't think I could ever tire of these gorgeous sunsets. A huge special thanks to our dear friends for being so hospitable and for welcoming us all into your home.

We miss you and that stunning view already!

P.S.  We will be back for sure!

Good Old Fashioned Fun!

My girls love playing with cardboard boxes. No matter how many toys the kids have a cardboard box has always provided countless hours of imaginary fun. When they were very young the box and paper were so much more fascinating then the actual "expensive" toy inside. Isn't that the truth?
A couple of weekends ago my husband brought three giant boxes home. We set them up on the lawn, cutout some windows and doors and attached the three boxes together. They played for hours with this and when they got board we turned it upside down into a boat.
It's play like this that is so important for kids.  Not only does it allow them to think creatively but it "unplugs" them from our technology crazed world. I enjoy seeing what there imaginations can do and helping them to discover there own unique creativeness.
As a blast from the past, I decided to make some good ol' fashioned Rice Krispies squares the other day.  You really forget how good they are until you bite into one of these sticky, gooey, buttery classics.
I made these for my daughter's class but thought they could use some "fancying up". I grabbed a piping bag and filled it with some pink icing and finished with some colored sprinkles on top. Amazing what a little icing and sprinkles can do.

How do you hang onto the good ol' days?

Operation Pretty Porch

OK so you may remember from one of my last posts that I have a slight obsession with anything that lights up. Now that spring has definitely sprung my husband and I have been busy cleaning up the yard and making things look all pretty.

We had the front porch built a couple of years ago and also decided at that time to switch out the front door for a bright red shiny new one. Growing up on a farm in Ontario our front door was red and since then I always wanted that for my own home. I am really happy with the renovation results but felt the space was lacking that special little added touch. We already had the bistro set but the space needed something more. The wheels started turning and I developed a vision.

My vision consisted of solar powered lanterns, a bunch of them. It was not until this past weekend that I scored and found exactly what I was looking for at Winners.

Buying them was one thing, I then had to figure out how to arrange them all. I think I found the answer though. I am so happy with the way it looks. Now I just need some red flowers and a bit more green foliage.

I tried to take a picture of the lanterns all lit up at night but sadly it did not turn out. I guess you will have to use your imagination.

I will keep you updated with any advances with "operation pretty porch"!

Have you done any outdoor decorating?
